Description
The Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX was the final photo reconnaissance variant of this legendary aircraft to serve with the Royal Air Force. Combining the airframe refinements of the Mk.XI with the power of the Griffon engine from the Mk.XIV, the PR.XIX emerged as one of the fastest—and arguably most elegant—Spitfires ever produced. Its clean lines and lack of armament underscored its specialised role in high-altitude, high-speed reconnaissance missions.
Devoid of weapons, the PR.XIX relied on superior speed and altitude capabilities to carry out photographic operations deep over enemy territory. It served with distinction in the latter stages of the Second World War and continued in service into the post-war years. Notably, it flew the RAF’s final operational Spitfire sortie on 10th June 1957 over Malaya, marking the end of an era for one of Britain’s most iconic aircraft.
