Description
The Dornier Do17’s development began in the 1930s as a mail carrier plane before moving on as a recon bomber. With its skinny tapered fuselage, the aircraft earned the nickname, “the Flying Pencil”. The Z variant of the aircraft featured Bramo radial engines and included a heavily modified cockpit for more space and defence for the crew. However, the lack of turrets and this smaller crew space made the aircraft fall prey to Allied forces, and during the Battle of Britain, the Dornier proved to be quite vulnerable and lacking as far as speed was concerned. The Dornier would be rendered obsolete by the middle of 1942 but is cherished as a symbol of the Blitzkrieg despite its failings.
