Description
The Shorts Tucano T MK.1 RAF two-seat turboprop trainer’s development used the Brazilian Embraer EMB-312 Tucano as its base. Selected as a replacement for the Jet Provost, the Tucano excelled at both high-performance and affordable costs. The RAF version featured a newly designed nose, robust engine, updated ventral air brake, wingtips, and a four-bladed prop. The fatigue life was extended by 50%, and its canopy was better fortified. In the middle of 1988, the aircraft operated with the Central Flying School at the Royal Air Force Scampton. 130 aircraft were commissioned and delivered to replace the Provost with the No.7 FTS of the Flying Training School being the first to receive their aircraft.
