HMS York was classed as a heavy cruiser and the half sister of HMS Exeter, possessing 6 No. 8 inch guns, arranged on 3 three turrets and was commissioned in May 1930, spending the pre war years, serving on the North American and West Indies Stations. At the outbreak of WWII, she initially acted as an escort to North Atlantic convoys, and then participating in the Norwegian Campaign in April 1940, prior to being transferred to the Mediterranean. She was then unfortunately disabled by Italian explosive motorboats at Suda Bay, Crete in March 1941, and steered onto a sandbar, to be used as an anti-aircraft gun platform, before being damaged beyond repair by German bombers. She was salvaged in 1952 and scrapped shortly thereafter, in Bari, Italy.
