Description
The Fairey Gannet was a British martitme turbo-prop patrol aircraft designed for ASW operations and early warning. The flight of the prototype took place in 1949 (with the Armstrong-Siddeley Double Mamba engine), and the first landing of Fairey Gannet on an aircraft carrier took place on June 19, 1950. The Gannet entered service in 1953. Several versions were produced, the most important of which were the following: AS.1 (ASW operations, 183 examples were created), T.2 (training version, 38 examples), AEW.3 (early warning aircraft, 44 examples). In total, 351 serial machines were built. Gannets were also used by three different propulsion units: ASMD.1, ASMD.2 and ASMD.4. with a power from 2950KM to 3875KM. The aircraft was exported to Australia, Germany and Indonesia. It was withdrawn from the British airline in 1978. Although it had no fixed armament, it could carry up to 908 kg of torpedoes or bombs.
