The Sikorsky CH-54A Tarhe was one of the largest and most powerful helicopters ever operated by the United States Army.
Designed as a heavy-lift flying crane, it first entered service during the early 1960s and was built specifically to transport oversized loads that conventional helicopters could not carry.
Named after Tarhe, an influential Native American leader of the Wyandot people, the aircraft became renowned for its exceptional lifting capability and distinctive skeletal fuselage.
Powered by twin Pratt & Whitney turboshaft engines, the CH-54A could carry cargo externally beneath its fuselage, allowing it to transport artillery pieces, armoured vehicles, construction equipment, damaged aircraft and prefabricated buildings directly to locations with little or no infrastructure.
Its innovative design eliminated the need for a traditional cargo cabin, reducing weight while maximising lifting performance.

One of the more unusual missions undertaken by the Tarhe involved carrying the M-121 10,000-pound bomb.
Originally developed as a massive general-purpose bomb, the M-121 could be deployed by the CH-54A to create instant helicopter landing zones by clearing dense jungle vegetation.
These operations enabled troops and supplies to be inserted into previously inaccessible areas, demonstrating the remarkable versatility of the aircraft beyond its traditional transport role.
